Whitespace and Shell to launch Digitalisation Innovation Challenge

Whitespace, the innovation engineering studio, has today announced the launch of the Shell Digitalisation Innovation Challenge. With the objective to explore new ways of digitising its current paper-based gift voucher process, Shell has partnered with Whitespace to source the most innovative startups and SMEs to support the multinational oil and gas company in achieving its goals and a higher standard of customer service.

Helen Dawson, Digital Transformation Lead at Shell Retail says: “Shell aims to be at the forefront of change in what is becoming an increasingly interconnected world, which means we need to keep innovating in new ways to deliver what our customers need. One area we plan to digitalise is our current paper-based gift voucher process, through implementing an application solution that enables us to digitise and distribute gift vouchers, and reduce costs.”

Shell is looking for an application solution that can be deployed for the distribution of its gift vouchers to customers. Shell issues gift vouchers that can be purchased or used to compensate customers. They would also like to allow customers to convert Shell gift vouchers to Shell Go+ loyalty visits to claim rewards.

To realise its vision, Shell has enlisted Whitespace’s support to kickstart an innovation programme that will see a selection of talented and ambitious start-ups and SMEs put forward their proposed solution for the challenge. In order to qualify, the solution will need to be compatible with mobile devices and capable of customer data collection, as well as offering proven capabilities and an example of previous deployment in a retail setting. The applicant must also be a UK registered company.

The most impactful applicant will be given the chance to work with Shell on a “proof-of-concept” project in the UK. For all other applicants, the challenge will provide a valuable opportunity to promote their offering and generate awareness of their business.
