heated in a 3D printer, very little research has been done into the effect on indoor air quality.

Clean Strands plans to work with the Built Environment Research Group (BERG) at Illinois Institute of Technology to find out what chemicals are being emitted into the air and in what concentrations. Testing will measure ultra-fie particles and total volatile organic compounds produced by PLA and ABS filaments.

It will also work with environmental consultancy Ramboll ENVIRON to set standards for safe indoor air quality when 3D printing. Plastic fiament that is deemed to be safe will be awarded the Clean Strands Seal of Approval. Testing and certification is scheduled to begin in September.
