Cooling breakthrough

Early test results show that a passive cooling system being trialled by Katrick Technologies and iomart could reduce a data centre’s total energy consumption by as much as 25%. A prototype installed at iomart’s Glasgow data centre captures heat energy generated by day-to-day operations and, through the use of bi-fluids, converts it into fluid vibrations that move fins specially designed to remove heat.

Trial data suggest that using this system instead of energy-intensive condensers could cut the electricity consumption of data centre cooling systems by almost 50%. •
