Amazon Alexa, Echo, and the all-new Echo Dot are coming to the UK, Amazon today announced.
Amazon Alexa is a cloud-based voice service that can answer your questions, play music, read audiobooks and more. Alexa is the brain behind Echo and Echo Dot, voice-controlled speakers that give you access to Alexa’s capabilities.
“Millions across the US have already fallen in love with Alexa. And, predictably, she’s even more likeable with a British accent,” said Jeff Bezos, Amazon Founder and CEO. “We’re delighted to be bringing Echo and Alexa to the UK.”
Since the service runs in the cloud it is always getting smarter and third party developers are building new skills for Alexa everyday. There will be thousands of Alexa skills available for UK customers at launch including skills from Spotify, Uber, Hive, Just Eat, National Rail Enquiries.
Another skill available to users is the ability to control your lights. With this integration, users of Philips Hue connected lighting system will now be able to turn lights on and off and create the perfect ambiance by simply speaking to Amazon Alexa.
“We’re excited about the increased functionality of the Philips Hue Alexa skill as well as its expansion into the UK and Germany, which will bring customers innovative new functionality,” said Steve Rabuchin, Vice President, Alexa. “Philips Lighting has made it easy for their customers to manage home lighting and the voice control from Alexa makes it a frictionless experience.”
